The Hiawatha Trail

Our first excursion since moving here to Spokane was a bike ride on the Hiawatha trail.  This used to be a railroad track, and has since become obsolete.  They removed the tracks, and converted it into a mountain bike trail.  It is over 15 miles long, 98% downhill, and goes through 7 tunnels and crosses a number of trestle bridges.  You are required to have a head lamp to ride the trail because the tunnels are so long that there is no light.  Taters even had her own little light in the bike trailer to keep her and Seth safe from monsters in the dark.  At the bottom, you can take a shuttle back to avoid a 15-mile uphill ride.  Then on the drive out, we almost ran into a baby black bear.  He was running right in front of our car, and went into the trees.  He was looking back at us in sort of a panic/curious state.  He was very cute, and fortunately we didn't see his momma so as to avoid getting mauled to death...  although I am sure she was just a little ways away in the trees.  Tate was concerned about the baby bear being alone and kept asking us where the momma bear was.

In the beginning....

This is the first tunnel at the beginning of the trail, and it was 1.7 miles long.  When you first went in it was sort of disorienting due to the transition from bright sunlight to total darkness with only a small circle of light ahead of you.

This tunnel was so long that it had two little draining gutters on each side because of all of the water draining into it.  It crosses the Idaho-Montana border in the middle.

This is Tate with her flashlight looking out for herself and Seth.  She actually loved the tunnels.  Every time we came out of a tunnel she asked if there were more tunnels to go through.

This is some dad pulling his trailer... I think he was a super male model.

This is the landscape that we were riding through.  Very pretty.

This is one of the bridges that we eventually rode over, from higher up on the trail.

Mr. Coolby on one of the bridges.

We went with Mike and Heidi English.  Mike is a resident at the hospital with Colby.

Look at all those trees!!!! This is how the whole Inland Northwest landscape looks.  Lots of dense pine trees.

Wwo - it's SO green there! Tons of trees too. That bike ride looks fun. The lake looks cool too! How fun to be in a new place and find all of the fun places. It looks like it's nice weather there too. I can't believe how big Seth is getting! He's too cute for words. I'm sad I probably won't get to meet him until he's 10. Does Tater even remember me? Sad. How's residency so far? We need to talk! Hope all is well with you guys. Miss you!

We are so jealous. Swimming, biking, parks . . .? is that what summer is suppose to be like? We need to get out of the house and start playing. That bike trail looks amazing. We would love to come see you. Sam enjoyed looking at all the pictures. He really misses Tate. He thinks her super Tate costume is pretty cool. We are going to make one today, "just like Tates."

Good thing you guys had your helmets on. Wouldn't want to tip over on the grated dirt at those crazy speeds. Otherwise, Colby might be a vajtable. Oh, wait, too late.

By now you have to know that I only know how to post mean stuff on here.

I've been biking on this trail with my family! Isn't it amazing! It's so fun you guys are in Spokane. We haven't seen you at my parents' ward, though, so I think you must be in a different one. We are going to the cabin this week and I just realized that I forgot to email you to come! So, call me if you guys think you can come out one day this week. We'd LOVE to have you! My cell is 414-248-2286. Please call! We'd love to see you!
